Long trapped in development, and originally planned as a vehicle for Eminem when it was seen as a 'metaphorical' sequel to 8 Mile, boxing drama Southpaw is finally going ahead with director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer) at helm. Jake Gyllenhaal takes the lead as Billy Hope, a welter weight boxer whose personal life begins falling apart just as he wins his first title, the actor gaining fifteen pounds of muscle for the role, looking almost unrecognisable after losing thirty pounds to play gaunt sociopath Lou in Nightcrawler. The first image from the movie, courtesy of the Golden Globes Awards Twitter page, shows just how extreme his transformation is. For comparison, here he is in Nightcrawler.
Yeah, we're almost in Christian Bale territory here.
Also starring Rachel McAdams, Forest Whitaker, Naomie Harris, Victor Ortiz, and 50 Cent, Southpaw is set for release sometime in 2015.
