In a piece of news that is no surprise, considering the box office success of Marvel's The Avengers (Avengers Assemble if you live in Europe....thought I could stop saying that now), Warner Bros., who own the rights to the entire roster of DC Comics' characters, are moving forward with the big screen version of DC's own team of superheroes, the Justice League, which counts Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, and The Flash among it's many members. Rumors have been circulating for years now that Warner Bros. would follow Marvel Studio's lead, now it seems that those rumors are proving to be true, with script writer Will Beall (the upcoming Gangster Squad) being brought on to write the screenplay for the planned movie.
There is no word on whether Warner Bros. will follow Marvel's model of several stand alone movies leading to the separate characters teaming up, or a stand alone Justice League film. Next year's Superman movie, Man Of Steel, could possibly be the first movie to launch a shared DC universe, and despite the originals disappointing box office performance, another Green Lantern movie is still said to be something that the studio is pursuing. This Summer's The Dark Knight Rises is said to be Christopher Nolan's definitive end to his version of Batman (even though actor Christian Bale has said he would return for another movie if Nolan had one in him), so if they are to follow Marvel's lead, another reboot of the Batman franchise will be in order. But this is all speculation at this stage.
This isn't the first time a big screen Justice League movie has been attempted. A motion captured version of the film, coming from Mad Max director George Miller, was set to be begin filming in 2008, with Adam Brody, Armie Hammer, D.J. Cortrona, and Megan Gale signed as The Flash, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman respectively. These plans fell through though, with one of the reasons cited being that Warner Bros. wanted to release 4 solo films featuring the Justice League characters between 2008 and 2010 leading to a Justice League movie. These plans obviously didn't pan out.
