Given the mind blowing success of Jurassic World, it’s no surprise that studios are going to be a lot more open to prehistoric themed projects for the foreseeable future. First out the gate is Meg, a script by Dean Georgaris (Lara Croft: the Cradle of Life), based on the novel of the same name by Steve Allen that follows two men who band together to take down a giant, prehistoric shark, or Megalodon to give it’s proper name, threatening the California coast. So, basically Jaws with a much bigger shark, or, maybe an even better comparison, a big screen version of many a monster movie you’d find on Sy Fy.
This project has been in development for some time, with Disney going to pull the trigger on it way back in 1997, before Deep Blue Sea’s failure to ignite the box office saw it mothballed. Now, Warner Bros. have gotten their hands on, and are in talks with Cabin Fever and Hostel’s Eli Roth to bring it to life, with an eye to making it a tent pole movie for them. After a successful career doing indie horrors, Meg will see Roth handle a blockbuster for the first time, and I’m excited to see what his twisted imagination has in store for the concept.
