Next year, Warner Brothers are trying their hand at building a super hero universe, and the opening salvo, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice has just debuted it's first trailer. While a good number of the Justice League will appear, this teaser is more concerned with building up the inevitable clash between two of DC Comic's biggest heavy hitters.
Make no mistake about it, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel follow-up is cranking the grimdark dial all the way up to eleven. While I kinda dig that they are directly addressing the destruction happy approach Superman had to saving Metropolis last time we saw him, Warner Bros.' 'gritty' approach to DC's superhero is appealing to me less and less. It's obvious Snyder is drawing from Frank Miller's classic The Dark Knight Returns (he always wanted to adapt it, and, god bless him, he is, throwing in some of his Watchmen aesthetic for good measure), and there is some real meat there, but this is a pretty joyless, dour teaser that hinges on a clash that realistically will only be a third of the movie, before they put aside their differences to take down Lex Luthor, and get all buddy buddy for Justice League. And I really don't think that's Ben Affleck's Batman drawl at the end. My money's on Mettalo.
The recently released second trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and even the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron, left me with an incredible feeling of joy and excitement. This just leaves me numb. What do you think? Sound off below.
Released: March 26th 2016
