When Tron Legacy opened way back in 2010, it was wasn't met with the enthusiasm Disney were expecting from the sequel to the 1982 cult classic. It wasn't a terrible movie by nay stretch of the imagination, but its lacklustre box office performance definitely hurt plans director Joseph Kosinski had for a sequel, one that was hinted at heavily at the movie and the Flynn Lives short film found on the Blu-Ray. Tron 3 seemed to be on track in 2013 when Kosinski revealed to us in an interview that he was working on a script that would deliver on the promise of the end of Tron Legacy, but any news of the project seemed to dry up, and I think everyone just assumed that a second sequel to Tron was dead.
Well, maybe not as dead as we thought, with a surprising announcement from news site VanCity Buzz that Disney has indeed green lit Tron 3 and it will begin shooting in Vancouver in October. There is no official confirmation from Disney as of yet, but the site is not just some rumour site but a legitimate news source, so there is some good chance that Tron 3 is good to go, possibly with Kosinski at the helm. Of course, there is no knowing in what direction the movie will go, but Tron Legacy's lead Garrett Hedlund is apparently confirmed to return, and considering how that movie ended, it is safe to assume that Olivia Wilde's Quarra will be making an appearance. It will be interesting to see if Cillian Murphy will reprise his very brief role of Ed Dillinger Jr. (son of the original's bad guy) as it was clear he was been built up as a villain to menace our heroes sometime down the road.
