Matt Damon has joined the cast of The Great Wall, a Chinese-set adventure with Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau and Pedro Pascal already on board. The film has been lingering in development limbo for a little while, but seems to be gaining some traction now.
Zhang Yimou is directing, so expect it to look gorgeous. The story sees a group of 15th century soldiers searching for gunpowder and stumbling across the titular wall mid-build. They get more than they bargained for though, when they learn that it's not to keep just invaders out, but mythical creatures too.
While I would normally be skeptical about something that sounds like it could spiral into a CGI mess, the pedigree attached to this bodes very well. Yimou knows how to do large-scale, beautiful looking movies, and Damon has a knack for picking great roles, so for now, colour us excited for The Great Wall.
