District 9 and the upcoming Chappie director Neill Blomkamp caused quite a stir yesterday, with comments relating to his planned Alien sequel that caused everybody (myself included) to assume that his plan was to erase Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection from continuity. It turns out that is not the the case, and, talking to AlloCine, the director cleared up the matter (in my defense, it really sounded like that is what he meant). "I'm not trying to undo Aline 3 or Alien: Ressurection. My favorites are the first two movies," the director told the outlet, "I want to make a film that is connected to Aline and Aliens. That is my goal".
O.k., that makes a bit more sense, especially calling his movie a "genetic sibling" of Alien, but it throws up even more questions on what direction Blomkamp's vision will go. Michael Biehn's Corporeal Hicks and Bill Paxton's Private Hudson featured in concept art he posted to Instagram (before he officially got the Alien gig), and while we're still unsure the art will figure into this new sequel, it does suggest we may be brought on a little backwards and forwards tour of the Alien tour, with one possibility being that the movie could take place between Aliens and Alien 3. The beginning does present some narrative wiggle room, but at this stage, we're all just speculating until Blomkamp puts us out of our misery.
