No matter your feelings towards Calvary director John Michael McDonagh's comments about Irish film, there is no denying Brendan Gleeson put in a fantastic performance as the priest given a week to love. And that performance was rightly awarded last night at the Moët British Independent Film Awards, with the actor beating out Benedict Cumberbatch and Timothy Spall to pick up the Best Actor award. Ireland was represented in other awards during the night, with Dubliner Andrew Scott (Moriarty in Sherlock, recently announced to be part of the cast of the next James Bond movie, Spectre) winning Best Supporting Actor for Pride, and Lenny Abrahamson's Frank picking up the Best Screenplay award for Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan.
