With David Ayers' DC super villain team-up Suicide Squad scheduled to hit the big screen on August 5th 2016, casting news has been trickling out, with The Wrap offering up some very interesting information, claiming that Jared Leto is being eyed by Warner Bros. to play the Clown Prince of Crime himself, The Joker. While it was inevitable that The Joker would be appearing in the DC's slate of upcoming movie, I think we all assumed he would be kept for a solo movie with Ben Affleck's Batman, not the second movie into the ambitious attempt to build a DC cinematic universe. What's more, The Wrap are also claiming that Leto is the second choice for the role, with Ryan Gosling originally approached, but the talks fell through when he was unwilling to sign a deal for multiple appearances as the character.
If Leto is indeed in the running and does sign on the dotted line, it will be his first role since winning the Best Supporting Oscar for Dallas Buyers Club. A comic book role does seem to be something he has been searching for, having been in the running for Marvel's Doctor Strange, and while the spectre of Heath Ledger will no doubt be hanging over the role (no matter who is chosen for the role, the backlash from fans will probably be of BatFleck type proportions), something about him does seem right for the role, and I have the feeling we would see yet another great interpretation of the classic character.
