There has been a lot of talk of an Independence Day sequel in the last few years, and now it is more than talk with Independence Day 2 officially given the green light from Twentieth Century Fox with a release date of June 24th 2016, almost twenty years after the original. Original director Roland Emmerich is close to signing on the dotted line, and production is expected to start in May of next year. Casting will begin as soon as Emmerich is officially signed, but it has been reported that Will Smith will not be returning. There's no word on what the story will be about, but we can't be wrong in guessing that humanity has built itself back up after the original alien invasion, only for the aliens to return for another round of famous monument smashing.
