Yesterday, Warner Bros. announced their full slate of movies based off DC Comics characters, and there were a few surprise tucked away in there, especially the David Ayer directed Suicide Squad, set for release August 5th 2016. For those scratching their heads, the Suicide Squad, first appearing in 1959, is a government funded team made up of a revolving door team of DC's toughest villains taking on highly dangerous, black ops missions in return for commuted prison sentences. In recent years, the team has been breaking out of comics into other mediums, most notably in t.v. show Arrow, and animated movie Batman: Assault on Arkham.
Now with the big screen beckoning, it's clear Warner Bros. have big plans for this anti-hero team, and they have been courting some big names, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing Ryan Gosling, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, and Will Smith have been approached about the taking a place in the ensemble cast of anti-heroes. Time will tell if any of them will sign on, but it is clear Warner Bros. have an A-list approach when it comes to this particular project. As for characters we will be expected to cautiously root for in 2016, rumours persist that the three leads will be expert marksman Deadshot (familiar to those who've played the Batman: Arkham games), Flash villain Harkness (otherwise known as Captain Boomerang, bringing up the question of whoever is cast appearing in 2018's The Flash, starring Ezra Miller in the lead role), and Vixen, actually a hero, and one time member of the Justice League, who in the comics went undercover with the Suicide Squad to avenge the death of a loved one.
I was initially skeptical of a team made up of mainly villains coming so early in the inception of the DC Cinematic Universe, but thinking on it, seen through the eyes of their adversaries is a pretty smart way to introduce new heroes, and distances Warner Bros.' approach slightly from Marvel Studios.
