Inspired by The Jungle Book, Neil Gaiman's children's fantasy novel The Graveyard Book is the tale of Bod, a young boy raised by ghosts from a baby in a graveyard he soon grows up to call home. As he grows older he finds himself in danger from The Jack Of All Trades, a mysterious society that have been searching for him since he was born.
A screen adaption of the book was already rumoured with Neil Jordan at the helm, but that project is now dead in the water. Recent developments have seen the rights to the novel snapped up by Disney, with director Henry Selick, best known for A Nightmare Before Christmas, James And The Giant Peach, and another Neil Gaiman adaption Coraline, attached. There is now word whether the movie will be live action or stop motion like the bulk of Selick's work, but his last live action project was the ill received Monkey Bone so it looks more likely it will be stop motion.
The Graveyard Book is a fantastic story, full of wonderful characters and ideas, and adaptions of Gaiman's work, the aforementioned Coraline and Stardust, have shown his writing translates well to the big screen. I will be watching this one with great interest.
