As we all know, Hugh Jack will be popping the claws one final time with 2017’s third Wolverine movie, saying goodbye to the character he has played for fifteen years. Up until now, the plot has been the subject of much speculation, but, speaking at the Fox Comic-Con panel this weekend, Jackman himself may have spilled the beans. Taking to the stage at the final, X-Men centric part of the panel, he addressed those in attendance with, “I’ve got three words for you: Old Man Logan”, no doubt sending many X-Men fans into a frenzy.
For those of you not in the know, Old Man Logan is the name of an uber-popular 2008 storyline by writer Mark Millar (creator of Kick-Ass) and artist Steve McNiven which took us to a post apocalyptic future for the Marvel Universe, one where the super villains had won and divided America amongst themselves. A much older Wolverine is the last remaining X-Man and has given up his given up his heroing ways, living his last days in peace with a new family. Of course, events conspire to make him pop his claws once again. Of course, Jackman shouting out the name at the biggest geek convention is the world is by no means a confirmation, but this rumour has been doing the rounds for a while now, and with Millar attached to Fox’s Marvel properties as creative consultant, it certainly has some legs.
If Old Man Logan does come to the big screen, it will have to undergo quite a few changes, with the story firmly rooted in the Marvel Universe, featuring characters in prominent roles, especially Hawkeye and The Hulk, whose rights lie with Marvel Studios. But there is a lot there of good ideas to stretch out for a feature, which should definitely be the darkest X-Men movie to date and will see Jackman go out with a bang if this turns out to be true.
