While he’s been enjoying quite a bit of success on American t.v., especially with Once Upon A Time, Rober Carlyle’s big screen outings have been very few and far between since 2009. But now the one time Begbie is back in cinemas, in front of and behind the camera, for black comedy The Legend of Barney Thompson. His directorial debut see him take the title role of a charmless barber whose mediocre life is turned upside down when he accidentally stumbles into serial killing. On the run from detective inspector Holdall (Ray Winstone), Barney turns to his domineering mother Cemolina (Emma Thompson) for help.
It’s great to see Carlyle back on the big screen, and there is some great pitch black humour on display here, with the three leads having an absolute blast, especially Emma Thompson (aged 20 years by prosthetics) who threatens to steal the show.
The Legend of Barney Thompson opens the Edinburgh International Film Festival today, before hitting our shores on July 24th.
