With 2011’s Green Lantern proving to be not quite the hit Warner Bros. was expecting (o.k., even I’ll admit that sentence is a bit of an und...
Now, an interesting new rumour has come our way, courtesy of Collider. As we saw in the original movie, there are multiple Green Lanterns in existence all over the galaxy, and in the comics, Hal Jordan (the version Ryan Reynolds brought to the big screen) has passed on the mantle to fellow earthlings over the course of the books history, namely Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner, who was the only Green Lantern for a long time after a crazed Jordan murdered his way through the entire Green Lantern Corps. Apparently, Warner Bros. are looking to focus on three human Lanterns (what we’re hearing is Jordan, Stewart, and Gardner) for the 2020 movie, with the plan for subsequent Green Lantern movies being to eventually focus on the entire Corps, making the series more of an ensemble piece, which is really interesting and an approach rarely seen with comic book movies. Though you’d have to wonder if the seemingly more grounded and gritty DC Cinematic Universe would bring in the more out there, alien members of the Corps, especially Mogo, who is a sentient planet, and Ch’p, the chipmunk squirrel (we’re in Rocket Raccoon territory there).
While this is all a few years off, Collider put forward the possibility that the human Green Lanterns could be introduced at this years San Diego Comic Con. This is entirely plausible, especially if one, or all, of them will be showing up in Justice League Part One. Considering Warner Bros. seem to be planning their DCCU years in advance, peppering in characters who won’t come into their own for a couple of years (Aquaman and Cyborg appearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice being two examples), we could definitely find out if this rumour is true or not in the coming months.
