Disney’s craze of remaking their classic cartoons into live action features is set to explode in the next few years, with Mulan, The Jungle Book, and Dumbo, amongst others, all on the horizon. Now, another name has been dropped into the live action hat, with The Hollywood Reporter revealing that the House of Mouse are looking towards the classic musical Fantastia for inspiration, deciding that the movie’s final segment, Night on Bald Mountain, is ripe for a retelling. This particular segment concerned Chernabog, a giant winged demon, summoning an army of ghosts from atop his mountain home. Check out the video below to refresh your memory.
While it is only in development at this stage, the script, from Dracula Untold and The Last Witch Hunter scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, is said to be taking it’s cue from Maleficent, possibly casting Chernabog as an anti-hero, or at the very least, a misunderstood villain. With no real story to adhere to, and a wealth of slavic mythology to choose from, Night on Bald Mountain definitely has a lot of potential to deliver something a bit different from the recent batch of Disney’s live action remakes.
