At this stage, when you think of Jason Segel you think of the lovable oaf, so prepare for that allusion to be shatter with the trailer for The End of the Tour. Already a hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, End of the Tour, based on the novel Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself by journalist Dave Lipsky, follows five days in 1996 Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) spent on the road for an interview with acclaimed author David Foster Wallace (Segel) during the book tour of Wallace’s groundbreaking novel, Infinite Jest. An intense and tenuous relationship formed between the, and after the five day they never met each other again, and the interview was never published, the audio tapes being packed away in Lipsky’s closet.
The above trailer offers a heartbreaking look at the intense burgeoning friendship between the two men, and to steal a blurb from it, Segel is a revelation. Whether he’s palling around with Muppets or playing a bumbling, good natured lawyer on t.v., he offers a performance you wouldn’t have never expected from him. There is already Oscar buzz surrounding this role, and judging by the trailer, it’s well and truly deserved.
The End of the Tour receives a limited release in America on July 31st. There is no European release as of yet.
