Avengers: Age of Ultron may be riding high in the global box office, but already attention is turning to The Russo Brother’s follow-up, Avengers: Infinity War. Word has already reached us that the two part blockbuster will comprise of a massive nine moth long production schedule, set to kick off in 2016, but now an even bigger announcement has come our way, revealing that Infinity War Parts 1 & 2 will be shot entirely using IMAX and ARRI’s next generation revolutionary 2D digital camera, a joint customised digital version of ARRI’s new large format camera, the Alexa 65, presenting the two movies in IMAX’s exclusive, and incredibly immersive, aspect ratio.
This marks the the first time a Hollywood feature film will have been shot completely using IMAX camera, mainly because they are ridiculously expensive, extremely loud monsters. IMAX cameras have been used to film parts of movies before, most notably by Christopher Nolan, and in fact, the Russo’s will be getting to grips with the Alexa 65 on Captain America: Civil War, using it to shoot select action scenes.
Speaking of the choice to shoot the highly anticipated Infinity War, which ties up a storyline years in the making, entirely in IMAX, Joe and Anthony Russo said, “The intent with the Infinity War films is to bring ten years of accumulative storytelling to an incredible climax. We felt that the best way to exploit the scale and scope required to close out the final chapter of these three phases, was to be the first films shot entirely on the IMAX/ARRI Digital camera.”
Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 comes our way on May 4th 2018, with Part 2 the next year on May 3rd.
