Pacific Rim and the recent Godzilla reboot heralded the welcome return of the giant monster movie, and the destruction is set to continue with sequels to both those movies on the horizon. Now, into the mix comes Colossal, an intriguing and very unusual take on the genre, pitched as Godzilla meets Lost in Translation. Written and directed by cult director Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Open Windows), the movie is set to be shopped to foreign buyers at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it already has a big name attached with Anne Hathaway set to take the lead role.
Anybody who has seen any of Vigalondo’s movies will know he’s a unique voice in genre filmmaking, and judging by the below synopsis, Colossal promises to be quite the experience:
Gloria (Hathaway) is an ordinary woman who, after losing her job and her fiancé, decides to leave her life in New York to move back to her hometown. But when news reports surface that a giant lizard is destroying the city of Tokyo, Gloria gradually comes to realize that she is strangely connected to these far-off events via the power of her mind. In order to prevent further destruction, Gloria needs to determine why her seemingly insignificant existence has such a colossal effect on the fate of the world.
