While all eyes may on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as the beginning of the DC Cinematic Universe, with DC Comics' trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman coming together for the first time on the big screen, with Cyborg and Aquaman along for the ride too, the more and more we hear about David Ayer's super villain team-up Suicide Squad suggest that it's where most of the DCCU world building will take place. Not only does it feature a collection of villains, from Jared Leto's The Joker to Jai Courtney's Flash bad guy Captain Boomerang, that will probably go on to menace the heroes in their solo outings, but rumours suggest we will get to see Viola Davis' Amanda Waller, the Suicide Squad's government handler and the biggest bad ass in the DC Comics universe (previously brought to the screen by Angela Basset in Green Lantern), curating a trophy case containing elements relating to other DC Comics properties (ala Predator 2).
Now, another connection to the wider DCCU might have reared its head with the news of the addition of Scott Eastwood (yes, son of Clint) and boxer Raymond Olubowale. While their roles were not announced when they were cast, Latino Review claim Olubowale is cast in the small, no doubt motion captured role as King Shark, basically a walking, talking great white shark. Considering the size of the man, this is no surprise (he was also the Axeman in two Resident Evil movies, Afterlife and Retribution).
But the real juicy piece of information comes with the suggestion that Eastwood will be playing Steve Trevor, a U.S. government agent who, in the comics, has acted as a love interest for Wonder Woman since the character's creation, and is a key part in her origin, responsible for introducing the heroine to the wider world. Could this lead to Eastwood playing a role in 2017's Wonder Woman? Only time will tell, but with Suicide Squad expected to begin shooting in the coming weeks, we should get confirmation on Olubowale and Eastwood's roles very soon.
Suicide Squad is set for release August 5th 2016.
