With Oculus last year, Mike Flanagan showed he had the makings of a very competent horror director, with a good line in delivering some unsettling, creepy imagery. His latest foray into the horror genre, Before I Wake (previously titled Somnia), has debuted, and the promise he showed with Oculus seems to be paying off here.
The premise is nothing new: a couple Jessie and Mark (Kate Bosworth and Thomas Jane) take in a sweet and loving eight year old, Cody, but they soon discover he holds a dark secret, as kids in horror movies do. When he falls asleep, his imagination manifests in the real world, but where there are good dreams, there is also bad ones, and Jessie and Mark soon find themselves terrorised by the demons hiding inside Cody's head.
Despite the familiarity of the premise, it does have a really interesting story at its core (kind of like reverse Nightmare on Elm Street) , and there is an unbearably creepy tone to the above trailer, with some really creepy visuals, that promises an entertaining slice of horror.
