Everything seemed to be going so well for David Ayer's adaption of DC's team of anti-heroes, Suicide Squad, with the cast, which included Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and Tom Hardy, pretty much locked in from the off. But then the project hit a stumbling block when it was announced that Hardy, playing the Squad's de facto leader Rick Flagg, was dropping out due to scheduling conflicts (rumours that he wasn't happy with how big a role he was given once the final script came in were thrown around for good measure), with filming The Revenant and promotional duties for Mad Max: Fury Road taking up his time. Filming is expected to begin on Suicide Squad in April, so the hunt was on to fill the vacant role.
Jake Gyllenhaal, reuniting with Ayer after End of Watch, was said to be replacing Hardy, but that ultimately fell through. Now, according to The Wrap, the new Robocop himself, Joel Kinnman, is currently set to sign on the dotted line. Nothing is set in stone yet, but he is Warner Bros.' favorite to take on the role.
Suicide Squad is set for release August 5th 2016.
