Regardless of The Movie Bit's feelings on Fifty Shades of Grey, there was no denying that it would be rake insane amounts of money upon it's release, and it did exactly that at the Irish Box Office, taking in a record breaking €1.34 million in it's opening weekend, making it the highest opening movie of 2015 in this country, with Taken 3 trailing behind it considerably at €712,061. That's not the only Irish record it smashed. It is also the biggest opening for a 18 certified movie since Hannibal (which took in €889,222), and now has the biggest February opening in Ireland, beating Star Wars: Episode One The Phantom Menace's €1.1 million, as well as beating Ted's €1.1 million to become Universal's biggest Irish opening weekend. All this adds up to it been Ireland's 10th biggest opening movie of all time.
The movie's box-office takings here and in the U.K., where it's takings was a £23,000 average per screen and took more in more than the top ten combined, amount to €14.3 million, adds to an impressive $240 million world wide gross.
