For some time now Disney Animation Studios have been racking up hit after hit with some wonderful CGI animated features. Tangled started the ball rolling, then came Wreck-It Ralph which continued the studios new ascent to greatness and when nobody refused to let Frozen go (sorry) the studio had well and truly found it’s new computer generated feet. If you thought things couldn’t get much better than a talking snowman, think again, as Big Hero 6 is the greatest animated movie you'll see this year.
Following the story of Hiro, who, after his brother dies in a tragic fire, develops a special bond with an inflatable medical droid called Baymax. Together they build an inseparable bond and form a band of high-tech heroes. Loosely based on the Marvel comic, Big Hero 6 should go straight to the top of your must see movies of 2015.
There is very little to fault here as Hiro and Baymax set about unravelling the mystery surrounding Hiro’s brother’s death. And while death and destruction can be glossed over in many animated features, the only thing that will be glossing over here is your eyeballs. Big Hero 6 handles death perfectly, and before you think it’s all grim, it’s not. Hiro’s loss and his subsequent grieving and assistance from Baymax will not only have you crying tears of sadness, but expect tears of joy and laughter to flow from beginning to end. Disney have been pretty brave here, in not only the handling of death, but the the writing team have taken some very brave moves that you don’t see every day in an animated movie. While the kids won’t get it, Baymax’s low battery scene is nothing but a complete parody of someone getting absolutely shit faced drunk. And it’s hilarious! The kids will love it and so will the adults, but for very different reasons! Hairy baby indeed.
The visuals in Big Hero 6 are rather special too. San Fransokyo is a brilliantly realised version of the not so distant future, where neon lights and tech rule the roost. The splendid visuals also translate to our heroes as each character has some wonderful design and personality. Baymax though, leads the way here. At times looking like an obese Iron Man, Baymax will melt your heart on more than one occasion as he is one of the most likeable characters you’ll have seen in some time. Looking like a smoothed out version of the Michelin Man, this medical droid’s expressions as simple as they are, are fantastic and are completed by some brilliant vocals compliments of 30 Rock’s Scott Adsist
A rather epic and fitting score by Henry Jackman rounds off the greatest animated movie you’ll see this year (and we don’t care that it’s only January). Big Hero 6 is a perfect way for adults and kids to spend some time at the movies. Be warned though, expect some tears, even you stone cold 40 somethings will find it hard to keep the tears from flowing. Especially towards the end. And we’re not talking about the Stan Lee cameo(s) either!
Heartwarming and Hilarious, Big Hero 6 is an absolute must see. Do NOT miss this!
