When the credits rolled on Toy Story 3, we all secretly hoped Buzz, Woody and the gang's time wasn't done with, but with the that movie ending their story in the most perfect way possible, it looked very much like it was. But it also earned a $1 billion worldwide, and more than likely because of that, we can all jump for joy, because Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has revealed, during an investors conference call, that Toy Story 4 was indeed happening, and that John Lasseter, director of the original and the first sequel, will be again be sitting in the directors chair. There has been no official word yet, but is expected that Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and the rest of the voice cast are expected to return. Working from a story idea from some of Pixar's best (Lasseter, Toy Story 3 director Lee Unkirk, Up director Pete Docter, and Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton), actors/screen writers Rashida Jone and Will McCormack (Celest & Jesse Forever) will be providing the screenplay.
In statement earlier today, Lasseter said, "We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. ‘Toy Story 3’ ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another ‘Toy Story’ movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself". Pixar's approach to sequels has been a refreshing one, only if they have the right story will they move ahead with it, so we can only imagine this new new is something that does justice to the characters and continues their story in the best possible way.
Toy Story 4 is set for release on June 16th 2017.
