Alan Taylor's Terminator reboot, Terminator: Genisys, hits our screens next Summer, so we should be seeing a trailer in the coming months. But before that, our first official look at the movie comes in the form of two EW covers, featuring Emila Clark's Sarah Connor and Jai Courtney's Kyle Reese on one, and Jason Clarke's John Connor and Matt Smith's..........friend of John Connor on the other. As well as these new images, we get some new story details with everything quite familiar with the humanity of the year 2029 locked in deadly battle with the evil artificial intelligence Skynet, and Reese being sent back in time by resistance leader John Connor to protect his mother Sarah from a Terminator programmed to kill her. It's when Reese lands in the past that things get all reboot-y, with the Sarah he meets having been raised from the age of nine, after her parents were killed by a Terminator, by Arnold Schwarzenegger as an older Terminator model programmed to keep her safe. Called 'Pops', he has trained Sarah to protect herself, leaving her "a highly trained antisocial recluse who's great with a sniper rifle but not skilled at the nuances of human emotion."
Well, it's certainly different, and fits what we've heard that this new take on the mythology would mix in elements of what has come before. But I can't shake the feeling that it's different for the sake of being different, to offer a take no one has seen coming even if it hasn't been fully thought out. That's just my opinion, and time will tell how this all come together on the big screen on July 1st 2015.
