***UPDATED 3:09AM GMT Sept 3rd***
Contrary to the rumours that we wrote at about yesterday, Star Wars Episode VII will NOT return to Skellig Michael, off the Kerry coast, in November. The Irish Film Board have confirmed that there is no filming scheduled for Skellig Michael in the coming months.
Speaking to the Irish Examiner, Louise Ryan, the Irish Film Board’s marketing and communications manager said “Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board can confirm that no filming has been scheduled for Skellig Michael in the coming months. Any comment on the international blogs with regard to this matter is pure speculation at this stage”
While that statement rules out anything happening as of right now, it is of course quite possible that this could change. One of the rumours that was rampant around Portmagee in July, was that the Irish Film Board didn’t become aware of the production wanting to film on Skellig Michael, until the week previous to the shoot taking place. While it’s easy to dismiss this as a rumour, the amount of people who were talking about this was quite substantial. However, given the publicity that the production attracted in July, it turned into a debacle for the Irish Film Board with conservationists up in arms over the local bird population being disturbed (or not getting a role in the movie, we’re not sure) and I’d imagine they wouldn’t want a repeat of that “Episode”!
