If you remember back to the run up to the release of The Expendables 2, there was a scare amongst action fans when there was a possibility the movie could be rated PG-13 (12A on this side of the pond), removing much of the gore and salty language from the picture. Ultimately, this proved to be just a scare, and the movie was released as R. Now, with The Expendables 3 due in cinemas in August, the talk of a PG-13 rating has reared its head again. Speaking at a press conference promoting the film at the Cannes Film Festival, Sylvester Stallone announced that The Expendables 3 would indeed be PG-13, saying, "We want to reach as many people as possible. It's very close to an R, believe me, it's right there. But I think we owe it to the new generation. We thought we'd join that club for a while."
It's understandable that the film makers would want to appeal to a broader audience, and granted, you can get away with a bit more with a PG-13 rating than you used to, there is the risk of the movie losing its core audience. There is a chance it could revert back to R before the movies release, and that might be for the best. It's happened before, and didn't work out in the long run, especially with the Die Hard franchise. Time will tell if this new lower rating sticks fro The Expendables 3.
