Originally a serious villain in the pages of DC's Omega Men, the character of interstellar bounty hunter Lobo enjoyed a huge surge in popularity in the 90's when he was revived as violent anti-hero biker, this new version been used to parody the popular anti-hero characters from Marvel Comics, primarily Wolverine and The Punisher. To say this property is a strange one is an understatement. In his 29 year history, Lobo wiped out his entire race using a manufactured plague (save for his fourth grade science teacher), was hired by the Easter Bunny to assassinate Santa Claus, became care taker of a race of flying space dolphins, and was, for a time, a priest in a religion that worshiped a fish god with three heads. Now there are plans to unleash Lobo's unique brand of violent lunacy on the big screen in the form of a live action movie, with Journey 2: The Mysterious Island director Brad Peyton at the helm.
This isn't the first time a Lobo film has been attempted. In 2009, Guy Ritchie was attached to direct a live action movie which would have had Lobo arrive on Earth on the trail of four alien fugitives, teaming up with a teenage girl in the process. This story seems to be out the window, with Peyton also rewriting the script. I think Peyton is an odd choice for director, as Lobo is quite a violent and mature property, a million miles away from Journey and Peyton's other work, Cats and Dogs 2. But it's early days yet, and only time will tell.
